A bit of Berwick

To make room for Berwick railway station they almost totally demolished the remains of the ancient castle at Berwick. The castle had played a significant role in Scottish/English history as it was here in 1292 that Edward 1st who had been chosen to decide which of the claimants to the Scottish throne should succeed, picked John Baliol over Robert the Bruce.

Not much is left of the castle now. These are the 'Breakneck Steps' leading down to the remains of the Water Tower, built by the English in 1296 after they had captured the town from the Scots.

I'm amazed they did this
paul: vandals!
I can see how they get their name, what a shame it was pulled down. Makes a nice shot though Paul.
paul: they built some much stronger fortifications later
I doubt they would be allowed to do that now.
paul: tell that to the people on the HS2 route!
The victorians got away with a lot!
paul: well they also gave us the fantastic bridge...
