A walk around the snickelways of York

This little devil perched high on a wall marks the start of Coffee Yard. Why it is called a Yard I don't know since it is nearly 220 feet long and only 2'11" wide in places. This is a Printer's Devil it seems since York's first newspaper came from here in 1719.

A printer's devil was an apprentice who performed tasks such as mixing tubs of ink and fetching type.

What an absolutely glorious feature Paul
It looks as though it is well looked after.
He seems a cheerful little devil!
