A walk around the snickelways of York

Moving along St Andrewgate we come across another striking building that has clearly had another life before finding its true destiny as a homeware shop.

It's a lovely building, isn't it!
paul: we seem to have lost the art of decorative building a little. new buildings are often quite visually striking but it is all form rather than decoration

All that glorious gothicry for homeware!
paul: but it does stock a wide range of useful products!
Interestingly the Latin motto above the door means either 'For God and Country' or 'for our altars and our hearths', still doesn't give much of a clue to the original purpose of the building.
paul: It seems it was built to be a drill-hall and subsequently served as an Armoury
