The busker of Monchique

A few quirky photos from Portugal...

We first met this guy in 2007 at the very same spot. Then he was unhappy at our lack of financial reward for his somewhat bizarre guitar playing and made his feelings very clear. This time we had only just started to recognise that we had been here before as we climbed slowly up the steep road to the ruined convent at Monchique when we saw him perched at much the same spot. We had to stop and make amends by dropping a couple of euros onto his bag. He was quite taken aback - it seemed we were the first ones to contribute anything in a couple of days. He started to tell us how tourism had changed his town and the countryside around us and was happy to pose for a photo or two.

We met him again later as we walked back into town. He shouted for us to come and see something and he showed us the roofless remains of the tiny hous he had been born in. 'Imagine my life' he said again and again as he pointed out other significant places such as the house where his mother had died.

I am still imagining his life.

Well you've got a real character here Paul. From what you say he seems to have little ambition..
paul: I guess he lives his life with very different expectations. I wish we had talked more but he was making me feel quite uncomfortable
A fine image and an interesting story Paul.
paul: I was pleased with the picture which was a bit of a grabbed shot. I checked him out on-line and found quite a few people relating similar experiences with him
